In 2017, Hurricane Irma approached Florida with violent rain and sustained winds of 185 miles per hour. Although Florida experienced many hurricanes through the years, Hurricane Irma’s ability to destroy lives, homes and property caused many to opt for evacuation. My husband and I did not know if our house would be able to survive the hurricane, but we were pretty sure that our motorhome would not remain intact during such a powerful storm. We made the decision to evacuate. In our book, The Great Hurricane Irma Evacuation of 2017, we share the story of our ten-day evacuation. We recognized the hand of God protecting, providing and helping us all along our journey. We also share important information and strategies to assist you if you ever need to evacuate in an RV. |
About the Author
Mary Willock is a fourth generation Florida girl and retired schoolteacher. Both Bill and Mary have weathered many hurricanes during their lives, but an evacuation of this magnitude was something they never expected. Hurricane Irma took us all by surprise.
